Check with your local electric and/or gas company to see if you might qualify for a grant to weatherize your home. In the interest of saving energy, your heating and cooling company may insulate your attic, weatherstrip your doors and windows and even replace your ancient heating and cooling system. To improve your home try to convert your garage. This can be a cheap way to increase your home’s size. Very rarely do you need planning permissions as long as you’re not increasing the garage. Use the space as a bedroom, playroom, office or kitchen extension, etc. You can add plumbing and turn it into a bathroom too.
Keep yourself covered by building to code. If you secure the necessary permits prior to the start of construction you will have peace of mind down the road. If you decide to sell your house in the future you may be required to disclose whether your remodel has been built to code. It also covers you against shoddy work by contractors. If you have a permit, an inspector will make frequent visits to make sure the work is being done properly.
When you’re attempting to patch up drywall, it’s important that you do not go crazy on the spackle. The idea is to put a little bit on, scrape it down completely and then, allow it to dry. Caking it on will result in an uneven finish, no matter how much you sand the surface after it dries.
Consider the value that you are adding to the home through home improvement projects. You want to make sure that what you add to the home or change in the home is going to present an investment that pays off if you sell the home. You want to add value to the home, not take it away.
Make sure before you get started in remodeling your basement that you have kept in mind heating, cooling, proper ventilation and dehumidification of the area. If you have enough headroom, your heating, cooling and much of your electrical equipment can be hidden behind a false ceiling. Prepare to hire a heating contractor to help you with your basement project.
